چکیده

Four transits of the planet orbiting the star HD209458 were observed with the STIS spectrograph on board HST. The wavelength domain (1180-1710Å) includes H i as well as C i, C ii, C iv, Nv, O i, S i, Si ii, Si iii, Si iv and Fe ii lines. During the transits, absorptions are detected in H i, O i and C ii (5±2%, 10±3.5% and 6±3%, respectively). No absorptions are detected for other lines. The 5% mean absorption over the whole H i Lyman α line is consistent with the previous detection at higher resolution (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003). The absorption depths in O i and C ii show that oxygen and carbon are present in the extended upper atmosphere of HD209458b. These species must be carried out up to the Roche lobe and beyond, most likely in a state of hydrodynamic escape. Subject headings: Star: individual (HD209458) – Stars: planetary systems

Evaporation of extrasolar planets

Atomic hydrogen escaping from the extrasolar giant planet HD209458b provides the largest observational signature ever detected for an extrasolar planet atmosphere. In fact, the upper atmosphere of this planet is evaporating. Observational evidences and interpretations coming from various models are reviewed. Implications for exoplanetology are discussed.

Phase-dependent Properties of Extrasolar Planet Atmospheres

Recently the Spitzer Space Telescope observed the transiting extrasolar planets, TrES-1 and HD209458b. These observations have provided the first estimates of the day side thermal flux from two extrasolar planets orbiting Sun-like stars. In this paper, synthetic spectra from atmospheric models are compared to these observations. The day-night temperature difference is explored and phasedependen...

Supplementary Information for “Signatures of hot hy- drogen in the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD209458b” (Nature # 2006-09-10792)

This Supplementary Information provides details about data reduction, derivation of the photometric light curves, corrections to systematic instrumental effects, corrections to the transit spectra accounting for the stellar limb-darkening, and calculation of the Balmer jump absorption from hot (n = 2) hydrogen based on a published model of HD209458b’s upper atmosphere. It also contains three re...
